Statement In Support of Attorney General Rob Bonta’s Defense of Gender-Affirming Care

The Alice B. Toklas LGBTQ Democratic Club stands firmly with California Attorney General Rob Bonta in his leadership opposing the Trump Administration’s latest attack on transgender healthcare.

AG Bonta’s decision to join 18 other state attorneys general in defending the right of states to protect gender-affirming care is a decisive assertion of California’s values of equality, privacy, and the freedom to live as one’s authentic self. The Department of Justice’s attempt to subpoena confidential patient and provider records from Boston Children’s Hospital is not about justice but intimidation.

Gender-affirming care saves lives. It is supported by every primary medical association in the United States and protected by California law. The Trump Administration’s baseless attempt to reinterpret federal drug law to criminalize evidence-based medical practice threatens not only transgender youth but the entire healthcare system.

We applaud Attorney General Bonta for standing with trans and gender-diverse people across the country, defending medical providers who practice compassion and science, and protecting the sovereign right of states like California and Massachusetts to regulate medicine without political interference.

Alice was founded on the belief that LGBTQ+ people deserve representation, protection, and dignity under the law. We are proud to support Attorney General Bonta’s courageous stand in the face of federal overreach and renewed anti-trans hostility.

Trans rights are human rights. California will not be intimidated.
